Sandboarding in Colorado - When someone thinks of activities in Colorado the first few options that come to mind is skiing and snowboarding. If you are looking for an adventure that is out of the ordinary, one place to look is in Colorado’s Great Sand Dunes National Park. It is here at the park that travelers can try their hand at sandboarding and sand sledding.
The 132 square mile park lies approximately 2.5 hours to the southwest of Colorado Springs. Some of the activities in the park are hiking, backpacking, camping, horseback riding, and of course sandboarding and sand sledding. Visitors can enter the park for a small fee paid at the gate. If you are headed to the dunes make sure you have your equipment before entering the park as you cannot rent your equipment there. You cannot use snowboards or snow sleds on the sand, as special equipment is required. Kristi Mountain Sports in Alamosa as well as the Oasis Store which is closer to Great Sand Dunes park rents the necessary gear. Vacationers should to go during the warmer months of approximately April to October because the sand will freeze during the winter.
